GG: We have gone through a lot together. Likewise, he is married to his fellow gay journalist, David Miranda. It is magical taking care of them, and seeing the world through their eyes. And we have to be kind to one another.

GG: We can be better people if we allow ourselves to be open to receiving and giving love.

To date, he has worked for many reputed companies. Having to bring bodyguards with us everywhere we go is obviously not an ideal situation, but that is the price that we have to pay for the work we do. Together, they are parents to two sons.

Since the release of his statement, Greenwald's post has received an outpouring of supportive comments.

So, I rented an apartment for seven weeks in Rio, and I met David on the first day. Because of the work we do, people will always label us, scrutinize our lives, and hate us when we threaten the positions of powerful people. It is going to continue forever. I kicked a ball straight into Glenn’s drink and spilled it, so I went up to him and apologized.

It was love at first sight. It is a lot of work, yes, but I can confirm that it’s totally worth it. He taught me how to be a father.

Similarly, he worked as a constitutional attorney for ten years. He is survived by Greenwald and their two adopted young sons.

Greenwald added: “His death, early this morning, came after a 9-month battle in ICU.”

Greenwald said that his husband was hospitalized due to a “life-threatening illness… from a suddenly inflamed and infected abdominal region that quickly spread via his blood to multiple organs.”

“He died in full peace, surrounded by our children and family and friends.”

Greenwald, an American expat who has taken up residence in Brazil, and Miranda met on Ipanema Beach in Rio 2005.

They moved in together five days after their first encounter.

Greenwald eulogized his late husband as someone whose “life was extraordinary in all ways.”

“His mother died when he was 5, leaving him an orphan in Jacarezinho,” according to Greenwald. As for the content of the videos: I have no embarrassment or regret about them.

But as David said, there is a cost to everything in life, and sometimes it is worth paying. And they strengthen a marriage too. Maybe this makes us unique as a couple, but nobody wants to marry or live with a yes-man. Named in 2019 by Time magazine as one of the world’s next generation of new leaders, he was the first LGBT City councilor in Rio’s history.
