Definition of Homosexuality in Biblical Context

Homosexuality refers to sexual or romantic relations between individuals of the same sex.

Love and Personal Autonomy

Others claim that love justifies same-sex unions if it is consensual. Our world is filled with lures and entrapments, including the enticement to practice homosexuality.

The temptation to engage in homosexual behavior is real to many. God created marriage and sexual relationships to be between one man and one woman: “At the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’” (Matthew 19:4–5).

Holiness and Covenant

The many instructions in Leviticus reflect God’s desire that His people live distinctly from surrounding cultures. All sin is offensive to God. Without Christ, we are lost, whatever type of sin has entangled us. It is the difference between active sin and the passive condition of being tempted.

1 Timothy 1:9-10

“We realize that law is not enacted for the righteous, but for the lawless…for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals…”

This statement includes same-sex acts in a broader list of behaviors counter to the “sound doctrine” rooted in the gospel.

Theological Themes

According to the Bible, God’s forgiveness is available to the homosexual just as it is to the adulterer, idol worshiper, murderer, and thief. While Scripture highly values love, it consistently teaches that holy love aligns with God’s moral order. In the same way, the men also abandoned natural relations with women and burned with lust for one another.”

The broader context of Romans 1 addresses how humanity’s rejection of divine truth leads to various expressions of sin.

But in 1 Corinthians 6:11, he reminds them, “That is what some of you were. Jesus affirms this creation pattern in Matthew 19:4-5, grounding marriage in the union of man and woman.

Same-sex attraction is always, on some basic level, an expression of the fallen nature.

As sinful human beings living in a sinful world (Romans 3:23), we are beset with weaknesses, temptations, and inducements to sin.
