This isn’t merely about personal discovery; it’s about untangling a life deeply interwoven with another, built on assumptions that suddenly shift beneath everyone’s feet.
Sex helped them connect with other men in a way that felt masculine to them, ironic as that may sound.
Why do these men still identify as straight? To Silva, the results "demonstrate the flexibility of male heterosexuality and the centrality of heterosexuality to normative rural masculinity.” To these men, same-sex sex is compatible with heterosexuality: “It is not the sexual practices themselves but individuals’ interpretations of them that are central to sexual identity and gender.” For partners, the men preferred “secretive, nonromantic same-sex sex” and had both one-time meet-ups and regular male sexual friendships.
In an email exchange, I asked Tony Silva why he researches bud-sex.
Yet, countless personal experiences attest to a different truth. For Man #3, this meant exploring LGBTQ+ support groups and online LGBTQ+ communities. This attitude may be related to the greater emphasis on hypermasculinity in these regions as well as differences in political beliefs.
But times are changing quickly, and McKie’s research underscores the special bond that can develop between gay and straight friends to the benefit of both.
Calzo, J. P., Antonucci, T. C., Mays, V. M., & Cochran, S. D. (2011). Identifying as straight also meant they could avoid stigma and feel connected to a socially dominant group. It necessitates a re-evaluation of past experiences, relationships, and even future aspirations.
This act of finding his echo provided a foundational sense of belonging that had been missing.
Connecting with Role Models and Shared Journeys
Within these communities, the narrative style shifted from personal reflection to active engagement. He interviewed 19 rural men who have had bud-sex, and they gave several motives, including “helpin’ a buddy out,” relieving urges, relieving general sexual needs, and acting on their sexual attractions.
Not gay: Sex between straight white men. This is the moment the whisper becomes a roar, a clear and undeniable recognition of attraction to men.
Navigating the Aftermath: Fear and Confusion in a New Reality
The initial realization is not one of relief but, more often, of terror and profound confusion. To them ‘straight’ refers more to their identification with mainstream heterosexual institutions, such as conventional marriage, and straight culture more broadly.
